Blender Effectiveness
A brake shoe manufacturer recently experienced difficulties in keeping a prepressed powder in a mixed state before pressing it into the final brake shoe product. To evaluate the product at various mixing and transporting stages, the manufacturer purchased and used the Johanson Flow Rate Indicizer to measure the Flow Rate Index (FRI). FRI is a strong function of particle size distribution. The FRI test data on the brake shoe powder showed the product particle size distribution varied widely within the same batch. This indicated either poor mixing or demixing during handling. Changing the mixing procedure and remeasuring the FRI finally produced a consistent product throughout the batch, which then translated into a consistent finished product.
The Flow Rate Indicizer makes product quality analysis quick and easy. Because tests can be run and interpreted in minutes, on line flowability evaluation is also possible. In the case of the brake shoe product, the FRI data quickly identified the mixture's problem and indicated necessary changes to produce the desired results. This allowed the manufacturer to quickly evaluate each batch after blending to eliminate any downstream complications.
In the early stages of formulation development, the Flow Rate lndicizer can help fine tune mixtures and optimize ingredients for the best and most acceptable product.
